About Freetail 7s

2021 Chicago Lions Women

Freetail Events was founded in March 2019 in Austin, Texas with a goal of delivering a world-class rugby tournament, Freetail 7s. The tournament’s namesake is the native Mexican free-tailed bat.

2021 – 8 men’s teams compete, and the women’s bracket expands to 7 teams (15 teams). The Chicago Lions triumph over 2019 champions Phoenix in the women’s cup match, while the Hartford Harpooners (M) defeat reigning champs Atlantis. In an early sign of a changing tide, the eventual 2022 men’s club national champions National Athletic Village, based in the Carolinas, edge out 2021 national champions Chicago Lions in the third place match. Likewise, the US Army (W) beat the Air Force Warthogs (W) for third in their own division. The Harpooners (W) and the Raggamuffins win the women’s and men’s bowls respectively. Sponsors Smartish and 4th Tap Brewing Co-Op were honored on the kit worn by our exceptional referees.

2020 – Freetail Events did not present a tournament in 2020.

2019 – The inaugural tournament fielded 8 men’s and 3 women’s teams (11 teams). Phoenix Rugby (powered by Scion) defeated the Central Queensland Dingoes for the women’s championship, and Atlantis Rugby men defeated Lomaiviti USA based out of Santa Rosa, California. The referee kit sponsors were local Techline Tools and Smartish.
